Hi! I’m Lindsay.
I’m a mid 20s Millennial (possibly gen z? who even knows) who’s passionate about making a sustainable and low waste lifestyle easy to obtain and accessible to all. And while I love our planet and earth, I also want to talk about some of my other passions (design, organization, skincare, relationships, books, music, food, project management, and more) through a sustainable lens.
When I was sitting down to think about what I planned to blog about, I said to myself – how can I still talk about all these things but get the message out there about sustainability and making better choices?
And thus, Sustainist was born.
The biggest thing on my sustainability journey has been developing a deeper understanding of how to weave that frame of thinking into every little thing I do and everything I’m interested in. So on here, we’ll talk about all sorts of things, but through a sustainable lens as much as possible.
Because how can we enjoy all of these other things if we don’t have a planet left to support them?
And most importantly, I really strive for this blog to live as an ongoing, open conversation and to be inclusive and accessible. So much of the eco-friendly space is 1. not intersectional (aka not thinking about how climate issues connect to other social justice issues) and 2. not accessible to all people from all different backgrounds and lifestyles. While I can obviously only share my own personal experiences, I also intend to lift up voices of others and share resources where I can on how we can all continue to learn and grow in this space.
A little about me:
- I’m obsessed with mid-century design + flipping furniture
- I only drink black coffee in the mornings
- I have the actual cutest dog in the world (I know everyone says that, but I mean it.) Her name is Luna and she’s a gorgeous lady.
- I’m an introvert who loves talking and people (I know, an oxymoron)
- I live for balsam candles and no one can convince me any other scent will ever measure up.
- I was what some may call a “theater kid” and absolutely love performing and singing.
- I have a sister who is so talented and we actually wrote a musical together…
- I am embarrassingly organized (I legit make a spreadsheet for everything and, as you’ll learn on this blog, am a Notion fanatic….)
- I went to college for advertising design/art direction and started my career as a project manager in advertising.
- I’m a volunteer project manager for my small town’s comprehensive plan committee and the co-chair of the Sustainability chapter. We’re working to add sustainable planning to our town’s plan!
- I also am the marketing director for an amazing podcast called On Wildlife, which highlights all sorts of wildlife and why conservation and biodiversity are so important.
- Our planet is something I cherish and value beyond words, and strive in my every day to make conscious choices and help my friends and family to do it too! 🌱
So what does it mean to be a Sustainist?
Let’s break it down a bit. I’ve pulled a couple of definitions from dictionary.com for reference.
The word Sustain has a bunch of definitions, but the two that really stuck out to me are: to support by aid or approval and to keep from giving way, as under trial or affliction.
And then diving a bit deeper, the word Sustainability is defined as: the quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance.
Now that we’ve got that first part, let’s look at what it means to add -ist to a word: a suffix of nouns that denote a person who practices or is concerned with something, or holds certain principles, doctrines, etc.
So, to put it all together, in my mind a Sustainist is:
I think everyone can be a Sustainist, and it can be displayed in tons of ways. So join me on this journey as we figure out together how to do just that 🙂
